Was Dede having too much of an effect on Mitch and Cam's lives?

That was addressed on Modern Family Season 9 Episode 20 when the former stepped in, and the family struggled to make sense of it.

Meanwhile, Phil, Luke, Alex, and Haley all had bad news to break to Claire and went to war over who got to do it.

Elsewhere, Claire indulged in her monthly spa day, but did she do so alone?

Modern Family Season 9 Episode 21 Review: The Escape

They are on a roll again on Modern Family Season 9 Episode 21!

The beginning of this season must have been just a small slump because I really like the last couple of episodes. They remind me of the comedy from the first few years of Modern Family.

Let's start with the best storyline, Haley Dunphy. She was all set to meet Arvin's dad and excited about it, but Arvin's mom shows up and throws a monkey wrench into the whole meet.

Typical. Dad is easy-going, mom's the tyrant.

Either way, Arvin dropped the ball, making it seem like he was ashamed of Haley and what she does. That's not who Arvin is, and Haley should've known better.

Phil Talks About Old Boyfriends - Modern Family Season 9 Episode 21

He's just awkward! I don't think Arvin has a mean bone in his whole body. Yes, he seemed to be embarrassed by Haley, but even I recognized Arvin was trying to shield her from his nutty mother.

I've been struggling with Haley pairing up with anyone, since her relationship with Andy, but I like Arvin.

As I said, he's awkward, but in a good way, and you can tell he cares for Haley. Arvin's just intimidated by his mother, so he came off wrong.

I'm glad Haley decided to forgive Arvin, and tell him that she loves him.

No, you made me feel bad about myself, and I deserve better than that. Ok?

Haley

It was so funny how they brought all of Haley's boyfriends in, one at a time, to see her in the hospital.

One thing that's so important for me, when we're talking comedy, is timing. I find so few shows get the timing of the comedy right, and it doesn't work.

The way they brought in the boyfriends was layered, and it was done so well, that it made me laugh, even before they spoke.

Confession! When Andy said he had a girlfriend, my heart broke a little.

Haley in the Hospital - Modern Family Season 9 Episode 21

All was well again, though, when Arvin popped in and professed his love for Haley. I hope they grow their relationship because I can see her marrying Arvin.

She's at that point in her life where I can see it happening. With everyone else, the timing wasn't right, or the pairing was off, but Haley and Arvin just fit.

Oddly.

What's her forecast?

Rainer

I didn't enjoy the whole Aunt Becky hospital trip. I know it was supposed to be funny how Claire, Mitch, and Jay were trying to get what they wanted by fooling a stroke victim.

Look at that sentence, though. They were trying to get what they wanted by fooling a stroke victim.

Cam and Gloria Help Phil - Modern Family Season 9 Episode 21

I know it's a comedy, but come on! This is your sister, Jay! Becky may be a big fat jerk-face and, yes, she was playing you all, but she didn't deserve that.

The timing? It was way off.

They paint Jay, Mitchell, and Claire as so petty. I never thought they were, but maybe they are. It's not a good look.

Guys, if we don't figure out a way get out of here soon, we're never gonna make it to the escape room.

Phil

Did you ever notice it's always the non-Pritchetts who slip away together to go off and do fun things on their own?

Last season, Gloria, Cam, and Phil were having secret meetings to plan how to manipulate the Pritchetts into getting what they wanted. A trip to Italy.

Wait, I see a theme here.

Arvin's Dad - Modern Family Season 9 Episode 21

Anyway, Gloria, Cam, and Phil slip away (again) to get trapped in an Escape room, only to get trapped in a room they have to escape.

Irony! That's funny!

She's not a jukebox, Fonzie!

Jay

I like the way those three play off each other. They're not neurotic like the Pritchetts, and I always have a good time watching them interact.

Of course, the writers played on Gloria's Columbian background, like she's some drug-sniffing K-9, but the irony of getting stuck in a room to escape while looking for an escape room, I found funny.

Sue me!

What did you think of Haley's boyfriends coming to visit? How did you feel about seeing Andy? Were you as turned off about fooling a stroke victim as I was? Do I need to loosen up? Tell me! I'd love to know your thoughts about the episode.

Who did Haley choose?

That was revealed on Modern Family Season 9 Episode 21 when Haley went to meet Arvin's parents, but a twist of fate meant she had to meet all of her exes.

Meanwhile, the family turned to Becky to get revenge when it emerged that she was part of a past controversy.

Also, Phil, Cam, and Gloria found themselves locked in a basement and had to find a way to get out.

19 Beloved Series That Fell Into a Slump!

$

Sometimes some of our favorite series despite their best efforts experience a slump.

There are many reasons why a beloved series could find themselves churning out a lackluster season to the disappointment of fans.

There are times when the writing is inconsistent, or the character development is lacking, or maybe there are too many plots or not enough of them. There is also an argument for some of these shows to have shorter seasons for the sake of tighter storytelling overall.

Be warned TV Fanatics, some of the shows that made it to this (previously assembled) list were casualties of Bloody Friday and Slaughterday. Sorry! That makes their cancellations all the harder to bear knowing they didn't go out on their best note.

Check out our list of shows that experienced a rough patch, and sound off below if you agree, disagree, or have some suggestions of your own!

1. Lethal Weapon

Tired partners lethal weapon s2e7
This one hurts badly. By now, fans are exhausted from the rollercoaster ride of Lethal Weapon behind the scenes drama and cast-shakeups. This show used to be one of the best FOX had to offer, and it was the strongest of this irritating reboot frenzy. It was a beloved series at TV Fanatic. Forgive me for speaking in past tense because with the abrupt firing of the supremely talented but seemingly controversial Clayne Crawford, I don't believe the series will be the same. It was renewed, and Seann William Scott is joining the cast, but only time will tell how the series will carry on.

Rocky cases, underused or uninteresting characters, and disjointed storytelling are a few of the reasons the series made it to this list. The biggest issue, however, is there was no end to Martin Riggs' pain and suffering. It's tough because if Riggs made too much progress, then it defeated the purpose of him being this troubled character. On the other hand, if he didn't make any progress or backpedaled it was redundant and not the least bit compelling. The series struggled a great deal this season pulling off the balance, and it missed it yet again with that finale.

It made for a heavy season weighed down by an unbearable amount of angst heaped upon this one character. Riggs had to be the most tragic individual on air. Riggs' tragic background and flashbacks were emotionally exhaustive. Perhaps there were signs along the way without us realizing it because Riggs' angst strained the friendship between Riggs and Murtaugh; there was a noticeable distance between them for most of the season. The heart of the series was the Murtaugh/Riggs partnership, and when that suffered, the show suffered. On that note, it's difficult to say how the new dynamic will play out onscreen now because Lethal Weapon was Riggs and Murtaugh and their kickass partnership.

2. Modern Family

Phil and claire talk to alvin modern family s9e17
Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? Possibly. Modern Family is beginning to show it's age. The series has been on the air for nearly a decade now. The majority of the kids are grown or are adults, and that has made the series lose some of its chutzpah. The comedic timing has been off for most of the season, and it didn't pack the punch it used to with the comedy.

3. Scorpion

Scorpion
Another series that was visited by the grim reaper, Scorpion was one of those fun shows that usually pulled off the kooky and silly. That being said, the series pushed the boundaries of belief suspension. It tested the limits of fans mindlessly enjoying some of their implausible cases. It led to the adverse effect and sucked the fun out of most them.

Cabe's troubles never felt as dire as the show attempted to make them, and it never felt like the series was in danger of losing him. That also applied to the many times where a team member was in mortal danger.

The majority of the season was bogged down by relationship drama. The love triangle of sorts (or was it a quadrangle if you included Sly?) between Walter, Paige, and Florence was interminable. It made it to the season (now series) finale, which ended things on a sour note, to the extreme annoyance of fans. It's devastating that the series went out on such a sour note.

4. Arrow

Arrow
Arrow's biggest pitfall this season was the never-ending inter-team squabbles. The infighting among the original Team Arrow and New Team Arrow was too much. What makes it worse is that both sides may have had valid points in the midst of the all the tension, but there was no way it played out where fans couldn't lean more towards OTA, even with Oliver's pesky trust issues.

Fans spent more time with the original members, and a rift spearheaded by a newer character who has at best been polarized since his arrival didn't do NTA any favors. Their actions were reprehensible all throughout, and it was never an even issue. NTA were wrong. Period. Any attempts at developing or adding layers to NTA to further endear them to the audience backfired. On top of that, the big bad of the season wasn't the least bit interesting.

5. Supernatural

Supernatural
A series that has been on for 13 years is going to hit a few rough patches, and Supernatural is no exception. The season kicked things off on a promising note by setting the season up to explore a brand new world. Unfortunately, the show didn't bother to truly delve into this new world until the end of the season. The show meandered along, and most of the season was forgettable. There was so much wasted potential. Nothing says slump like wasted potential.

6. Designated Survivor

Kirkman fires moss
To be fair, the second half of the season picked up, but that's due to the effects of the midseason finale and recurring guest stars like Kim Raver, Michael J. Fox, and Breckin Meyer. A series that relies on two time jumps in the same season would find itself losing steam.

Designated Survivor's identity crisis is the main issue. The show lost sight of its premise. Is it a political thriller or a political drama? There were terrorist attacks, conspiracies, and so many other plots happening at once that you felt you were being pulled in a million directions. The show had a difficult time spinning all their plates at once, and they often forgot some of their own storylines or wrapped them up in anti-climactic ways

In the meantime, one of the series' best characters, Aaron, was criminally and inexplicably underused all season. Hannah's job description was unfathomable to the tune of being utterly ridiculous, and Damian's presence in the season was a nuisance more than anything else. The 'ship between Seth and Emily was unpopular, and characters like Lyor were hit or miss all season. Designated Survivor's cancellation came as no surprise, sadly.

ABC Fall Schedule: Can Nathan Fillion Break the Tuesday Death Slot Curse?

ABC is the third broadcast-TV network to confirm which shows will be airing as part of its fall 2018 schedule, and there are a lot of bold moves from the alphabet network.

One of the network's most promising new series, The Rookie is being shunned to the Tuesdays at 10/9c ABC death slot.

Nathan Fillion, The Rookie

Given Nathan Fillion's huge fanbase, this could turn out to be a good move if the show emerges as a success. Every single show that has been airing in the slot over the last few years have struggled to bring in decent ratings.

While most of them end up canceled, the most recent death slot dramas that were saved by ABC are Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and For The People.

Meanwhile, Roseanne will have episodes ready for the fall as opposed to midseason which means ABC should be able to remain competitive in the lead-off hour.

Roseanne ABC Cropped

With The Middle ending, it's up to newbie The Kids Are Alright to hold some of the Roseanne audience.

Elsewhere, Fresh Off the Boat and Speechless are moving to the lower-viewed Friday nights in place of the recently canceled Once Upon a Time.

Related: Roseanne Renewed for Season 11!

This means both comedies will go up against Last Man Standing and The Cool Kids.

While Last Man Standing should win the first half of the slot, it will likely be a close race between Speechless and The Cool Kids.

LMS 622

A Million Little Things aka ABC's attempt to hit viewers right in the feels in the vein of NBC's This Is Us, will air Wednesdays at 10/9c.

It turns out, TGIT will remain intact on Thursdays with Grey's Anatomy, Station 19 and How to Get Away with Murder airing together.

American Idol, The Bachelor, The Fox, For the People, Grand, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Schooled and Whiskey Cavalier are on tap for midseason.

Modern Family Season 9 Episode 22 Review: Clash of Swords

We got hints about what's to come next season on Modern Family Season 9 Episode 22 when Mitch and Cam ended up with a new kid, Manny left town, and Pritchett's Closets received a buy-out offer.

There is a lot to talk about, but let's start with Mitch and Phil. I love it when they are featured in an episode. They're both nerds and have a love for fantasy/sci-fi genres, so it makes sense they would attend HeroCon together in cosplay.

A Bigger, Better Party - Modern Family

For those of you who don't know, cosplay is just a fancy way to say costume at fandom conventions.

Never mind how I know that.

Anyway, the last time these two got together in the nerdy kind of way, it was in Modern Family Season 7 Episode 18. Mitch and Phil were going to a see a fandom sci-fi movie together when they were offered gummy bears laced with pot.

Spoiler! They ate the gummy bears.

That's why we chose our secret warrior signal. My first suggestion was to blow a Viking horn. Don't google that, by the way.

Phil

If you haven't seen it, watch it. You will cry laughing. Seriously.

Back to this episode, I knew it was going to be funny as soon as I saw them on the couch together. The only thing that irks me is that, once again, Mitchell is keeping secrets.

Mitch came clean in the end, and his explanation about his fear of being made fun of by his family made sense. So, he's forgiven.

This time.

Phil at HeroCon - Modern Family Season 9 Episode 22

Mitch and Phil have this funny kind of chemistry that instantly gets me ready for a laugh.

Their personalities play off one another so well, I wish they were paired off more often. I suppose if they were, though, it wouldn't stand out and be so special.

I loved watching them at the convention. Phil believed so completely he'd been hit by the fool's wand that he determined his fate.

Phil has such a child-like wonder about him. It's nice to see someone share that with him.

I know you're scared, but you should feel proud. You took kind of a weird kid and turned him into somebody so comfortable with himself, he's willing to take on a pretty big adventure.

Cam

The closest he gets to that with Claire is their shared love of bad movies, which is adorable. They haven't attended one of those in a while. We only have one more season for them to share a movie.

Hello? Writers? Add that to the list.

The next big storyline was Pritchett's Closets. Claire took over years ago, but Jay can't let go completely.

Related: Get Comic Con HQ via Prime Video Channels to Stream Original Series, Past Comic-Con Panels & More!

Would you expect him to, though? The company is part of his identity. You can't ask a man like that to be completely hands-off.

When those nerds (wait, I'm sensing a theme) from EzraVision came in with an offer to buy the company, Jay turned three shades of red.

Nobody, but nobody was buying his baby.

Phil Has Powers - Modern Family Season 9 Episode 22

Claire, with her level head and her identity not so tied up in closets, sees the future. I was proud of Claire for doing her research, and finding a solution that would be good for both EzraVision and the future of Pritchett's Closets.

I think we're in for a lot of fun next season when the merger happens. Jay plus high tech equals hilarious. I'm looking forward to that.

The whole Manny going across country thing was okay because it tied into why Gloria was so obsessed with having a grand kindergarten graduation party for Joe.

Hey, you're blocking the driveway. Hit the road already.

Haley

Her baby is leaving the nest, spreading his wings and driving across country.

Alone.

What mother wouldn't be upset? An empty nest is no joke. Her nest isn't empty quite yet, but she and Manny have a special bond.

It makes sense Gloria wants to make every moment count with Joe. Gloria sees the future and what all mothers face in the future.

There are finite times when you can celebrate these moments of fun and innocence.

Mitch Gets Tackled - Modern Family Season 9 Episode 22

I suspect Manny will be back for next season with lots of new stories to share.

Speaking of Gloria, did you notice how she says Doctor Donna Duncan? It comes out sounding like dun dun dunnn. Ha!

Perfect for an archnemesis. Would you say?

There were a couple of things that surprised me. Pam's in jail.

Um, what?

And Cameron mentioned his parents weren't good with him when he was like Cal. I assume Cam meant when he was little, he was big for his age and didn't know his own strength.

Yes, Cam's dad is a bit of a grump but seems kind enough. Cam's mom is very doting, so when he said that they weren't good with him at that age, it struck me as odd.

Margaret is very vulnerable! I've had to rescue her a bunch of times from cults and an Amway pyramid.

Jay

Maybe the show added that so it would make more sense for Cam and Mitch to keep Cal while Pam is in prison. I don't know.

I'm not really sure why staying with Mitch and Cam wasn't the first choice anyway. They wanted a second child, and now it fits since Lily is missing.

What? Lily's not missing?

Oh, my bad. I guess we just don't see her much.

I imagine next season Cal will be living with the Tucker-Pritchetts, so that should be interesting to watch. I wonder how Lily will take it.

All in all, I enjoyed the episode, although not everybody made it in. I'll be back to watch the last season of Modern Family to see how it all ends and making predictions as I go.

17 TV Weddings That Were Nearly Derailed

$

Have you ever noticed how TV weddings never seem to go as planned?

We often see our favorite couples spend weeks planning the perfect ceremony. They tour venues, try on dresses and tuxedos, sample twenty different varieties of cake, and yet when the big day comes, all of their planning goes right down the toilet.

Natural disasters, car crashes, wardrobe mishaps, and even the occasional cold feet can threaten to derail the couple's ideal wedding.

We've decided to compile a list of some of the more noteworthy wedding day disasters, but the good news is, despite the universe's best attempts, they all still made it down the aisle!

Check out some our favorite TV weddings that were nearly derailed, and be sure to let us know which ones you think were the craziest!

1. Alex and Jo - Grey's Anatomy

Alex and jo greys anatomy
Honestly, Grey's weddings could take up a good portion of this slideshow by themselves. Everything seemed to be going well for Alex and Jo, until half of the wedding guests went to the wrong location. Since the wedding was delayed anyway, Alex and Jo took the opportunity to sneak off for a little fun, but then wound up locked in a shed with a corpse.

Needless to say, the wedding did not go as planned, but thanks to Meredith getting ordained online last minute, the couple tied the knot on the ferry ride back home. At least the wedding April planned didn't go to waste -- she ended up marrying Matthew!

2. Jake and Amy - Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Jake and amy brooklyn 99
Jake and Amy went through a lot of turmoil to plan the perfect wedding, but it all went out the window when a bomb threat was called in, forcing everyone to evacuate the venue. If that wasn't bad enough, the head of the bomb squad was taking his sweet time clearing the area thanks to the fact that he was still harboring feelings for Amy. To add insult to injury, Terry lost the veil!

By the time the bomb was found, the original wedding (and Amy's dress) was caput. Luckily, Gina has no tact, and was planning to wear a white dress, saving Amy's wardrobe. The rest of the team came together to turn the precint into a beautiful wedding venue, and the couple said their vows at the place where they spent the last couple of years falling in love.

3. Mike and Phoebe - Friends

Mike and phoebe friends
If you plan a wedding in New York City in the winter, you run the risk of a snowstorm derailing everything. The blizzard was so bad, that the priest couldn't make it. Luckily, Joey was still ordained from Chandler and Monica's wedding, so he stepped in to officiate. Getting married on the street outside of Central Perk may not have been what they planned, but it was beautiful anyway. Thankfully it was a short ceremony, because Phoebe was freezing in just her dress!

4. Leonard and Penny - The Big Bang Theory

Leonard and penny the big bang theory
Leonard and Penny decided to elope in Las Vegas, which seemed spontaneous and romantic, until Leonard decided it was the perfect time to inform Penny that he had kissed another woman. His logic of wanting to go into their marriage with no secrets made sense, but this was something he should have disclosed to her much, much earlier. It very easily could have prompted Penny to put the kibosh on the whole thing, but they went through with a lovely ceremony with their own vows that their friends could stream online. The wedding didn't end the fighting, but they eventually got through it. They even held a second ceremony for their families to attend.

5. Ben and Leslie - Parks and Recreation

Ben and leslie parks and recreation
Ben and Leslie decided they simply couldn't wait any longer to be married. Everyone they loved was already in Pawnee, so why not go for it? Of course, spontaneous weddings tend to hit a few snags. Tom gets ordained to officiate, but it turns out his certificate won't arrive for 24 hours. Ron and Ben go to a pawn shop for rings, but don't find anything useful. Ann is tasked with making the dress, but it's not going well.

In the end, it turns out Jerry is ordained, so he can perform the ceremony. Ron fashions two rings out of a fixture from the wall, and Ann makes one of the best wedding dresses in TV history out of documents from Leslie's career. Just when it seemed everything was working out, Jamm tries to ruin the wedding with stink bombs, causing Ron to punch him and get arrested. Ann bails him out, and the couple is surprised with a beautiful wedding inside the Parks and Recreation department. Honestly, it could not have been more perfect.

6. Marshall and Lily - How I Met Your Mother

Marshall and lily how i met your mother
It was one disaster after another for Marshall and Lily. First of all, Marshall, do not experiment with highlights on the day of your wedding. There is a reason most women do hair trials before the big day. The tips were bad enough, but they were still better than the bald spot he accidentally shaved trying to get rid of them. That wasn't even the worst of it! The flowers weren't there on time, the harpist went into labor, and Lily's veil was ruined!

Most couples would have thrown in the towel at that point and rescheduled, but not these two. Their friends took them outside and helped them get the small, intimate wedding they've always wanted, complete with a guitar player. Thankfully, someone found Marshall a hat!

TV's 17 Most Heavenly Fathers

$

Once upon a time, not so long ago, Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby) held the number one 'TV dad' spot on Father’s Day lists worldwide.

Sure, sure, Cosby and Cliff are two different men, but the lesson is the same. It's no longer enough to simply be present, crack jokes, and serve the kids Jell-O.

The time has come to hold our TV fathers to a higher standard. Out with the old and in with the new... Here are TV's Most Heavenly Fathers of this millennium.

17. David Nolan Charming, Once Upon a Time

Charming once upon a time
David Nolan (Josh Dallas) is techically Prince Charming, but considers himself a Prince of the people. A man like any other with feelings and emotions, he has both a kingdom to run and a family to protect.

A staunch beliver in happily ever after with an epic love for Snow White, he defends and sacrifices for his family at all costs -- literally making him the prince of dads.

16. Louis Huang, Fresh Off the Boat

Louis huang fresh off the boat
Father, Louis Hang (Randall Park) leads his Taiwanese family as they make their way in America during the 1990s. While his wife and three children have trouble fitting into their new Floridian community -- which is essentially absent of an Asian population -- dad is hell bent on making his new Cowboy-themed steak restaurant a success.

Louis is not giving up on the family's new life in Orlando no matter how (hilariously) tortured his family is by their new address. This father is determined to provide his wife and children with the opportunity he never had -- to live the American Dream.

15. Richard Castle, Castle

Richard castle castle
The only thing more honorable than a man who’s a fabulous father, is one who’s an amazing son as well. Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) has been sole custodian of his daughter, Alexis, ever since his wife cheated, divorced him, and ran off for a more exciting life.

Yet after his mother is swindled out of her life's savings, he also rescues her and moves mom in with him.

When it comes to Alexis, Castle's love knows no bounds. He's done everything from mercilessly torturing those who harm her, to making Alexis his ‘Best Man' when he remarries. Castle does everything for his child, because she is, without question, "the most important person in his life."

14. Rogelio de la Vega, Jane the Virgin

Rogelio de la vega jane the virgin
He may have missed Jane’s early years, but as soon as soon as Rogelio de la Vega (Jaime Camile) discovers he’s Jane’s biological father, he totally makes up for lost time.

The famous telenovela star supports Jane's relationships and pregnancies -- no matter how they come to be, or where they may go. Though rather self-obsessed, Rogelio has been a dream dad to Jane from the get-go -- even when suddenly being a father was virgin territory.

13. Andre Johnson, black-ish

Andre johnson blackish
It's anything but easy to establish a true sense of cultural identity while bringing up African American children in a predominantly white, upper-middle-class neighborhood. Yet Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) is determined to make it work.

He wants his family to have a happy, modern life -- based on equality and chock-full of opportunity. t's not all so serious though, as Andre is one of, if not THE funniest dad on network television today!

12. Fred Andrews, Riverdale

Fred andrews riverdale
While the rest of the parents in Riverdale are hiding scandalous family secrets from their children, Fred Andrews (Luke Perry) takes the moral high ground. Focused on his son, Archie, while guiding him through high school, Fred would do anything for his son — even take a bullet for him.

ABC Sets Fall Premiere Dates for Grey's Anatomy, The Conners & More!

ABC has finally confirmed its plans for the rollout of its Fall 2018 schedule.

The biggest surprise is that the network is holding off on launching the revamped Tuesday night schedule until the middle of October.

This could be attributed to The Conners, the spin-off of Roseanne, which only became a reality less than a month ago.

roseanne cropped 2

It was always unlikely the series would be ready for premiere week, but holding The Kids Are Alright, Black-ish, Splitting Up Together and The Rookie until it's ready is a bold move.

Roseanne was huge when it debuted back in March and had a halo effect that carried through the rest of the night for the network when it launched.

Perhaps ABC is holding off to give all the shows premiering the best chance at success.

Daniel Levy is in-demand.

Per TV Line, The Schitt's Creek star will stop by Modern Family Season 10 in a guest-starring capacity this fall.

He will be playing a courtroom sketch artist who draws both Mitchell and Cam, but neither character is happy about the end result.

Daniel Levy

The pair goes on a mission to find out why the sketch artist would draw them in such bad taste, and they find out that the man is out for revenge.

But, who is this man?

We'll need to tune in to the episode to find out. Modern Family generally pulls in some robust guest stars, but this role sure sounds like the perfect one for Daniel.

If you're a fan of Schitt's Creek, you know that Daniel is one of the best comedy actors around. His portrayal of David is part of what makes that show such a big success.

Daniel Levy Attends Event

The character is quick-witted, with some great comedy timing. If you've not watched Schitt's Creek, then you should definitely give it a try.

As previously reported, Modern Family Season 10 is scheduled to bow Wednesday, September 26th

The show's future beyond that milestone season is uncertain, as the cast will need to negotiate new deals if the network wants to keep the show around.

Modern Family Season 9 was down almost 25 percent vs. Modern Family Season 8. It averaged 5.7 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49.

Dan Levy

Older shows come with higher price tags, so it certainly seems like the show will need to stop the declines if it wants to continue at ABC.

Modern Family Killing Off 'Significant Character' on Season 10!

Modern Family is taking a major character out of the equation during Season 10.

Series co-creator, Christopher Lloyd has revealed that a key player will not be alive when the season comes to a close.

Lloyd told EW that the death “will be a moving event … that has repercussions across several episodes.”

MF SEASON 9 CAST

“We’re handling some bigger life events this season,” Lloyd explains of the show's darker tone.

“[Death] is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”

Related: Modern Family Adds Schitt's Creek's Dan Levy as a Villain

Modern Family stars Ed O’Neill, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Sarah Hyland, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, and Aubrey Anderson-Emmon and it would be genuinely surprising if any of those actors were on the way out of the ABC comedy.

Taking risks is all part of the game when it comes to veteran shows that want to keep viewers enthralled, but if it does turn out to be a huge character, it may signal the end of the series.

mf cropped 3

Modern Family Season 10 is the final contracted season, meaning that if ABC wants to keep it around, new deals will have to be put in place to have the cast intact.

That's where things get murky for the show's future. The ratings are not as strong as they once were. Modern Family Season 9 shed as much as 20 percent in the adults 18-49 demo.

Related: ABC Sets Fall Premiere Dates for The Good Doctor, Grey's Anatomy and More!

It ultimately averaged 5.7 million total viewers and a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49. While those ratings are still solid, we need to remember that ABC does not own the show. Thus the network makes nothing from the off-network deals or even international sales.

Could this big death drum up some interest and send the ratings upwards? Time will tell, but it's uncommon for aging shows to buck the downward trend.

23 TV Characters Who Own Their Age

There's been plenty of talk about ageism in Hollywood, but to say that television is devoid of older characters would be a lie.

Related: Get Shout! Factory TV via Prime Video Channels For Cult Classic Films & TV that Shape Pop Culture Now!

Television is rich with characters "of a certain age" who provide countless hours of entertainment. Whether these characters are true to life is a conversation for another day, but in their television world, they embrace who they are, no questions asked.

Some are comfortable and living the life of their dreams, others have chucked it all in search of new adventures. Some are sassy and sweet, other serious and over-the-top, but all of them have one thing in common: They all own their age!

1. Desna Simms - Claws

Desna claws
Desna is a woman who holds her own. Full of sass and swagger, she doesn't let anything get in her way. Sure, she's gotten herself into a terrible mess and no longer owns a nail salon, but that's just a blip on the screen for her on her journey to embrace life and squeeze it to the fullest.

2. Jay Pritchett - Modern Family

Jay pritchett modern family
Jay uses his experience and knowledge as a guiding force not only for his kids but for his younger wife, Gloria as well. There have been times where the age difference between him and Gloria has concerned him, but those moments quickly pass. He's comfortable with who he is and where he's at in life -- and he's not afraid to show it, even exploit it at times.

3. Abby Clark - 9-1-1

Abby clark 9 1 1
What we love about Abby was that she wasn't afraid to take the bull by the horns when she decided to give it a whirl with a much younger man. She was a bit self-conscious at first, but she ended up not letting her age get in the way of fully enjoying her time with Buck. After her mother died, she realized there were many things she wanted to do that she never got around to, and she didn't let her new romance get in the way of following those dreams. It's not that she didn't care for Buck, she just decided that she needed to put herself first for once.

4. Cookie Lyon - Empire

Cookie lyon empire
If we could choose to be any other woman for a day, we'd probably choose Cookie. She has tons of spunk, isn't afraid to say exactly what's on her mind, and has a fabulous sense of style. Yes, she's over the top most of the time, but who wouldn't be after the kind of life she's led?

5. Bonnie Nolan - American Woman

Bonnie nolan american woman
Bonnie's world came crashing down when she found her husband cheating with a younger woman, but it also opened her eyes big time. She realized she spent too much time trying to make others happy while stifling her own ambitions. And while the road hasn't been easy, she was able to start showing the world exactly what kind of woman Bonnie Nolan really is.

6. Elizabeth McCord - Madam Secretary

Elizabeth mccord madam secretary
Elizabeth McCord has never tried to be someone she wasn't, even when people tried to push her to be different or upgrade her personality -- or wardrobe. She's comfortable with who she is, and while she's learned a lot along the way, she's always remained true to herself.

As the song says, when you're accidentally in love there's no escaping it. Some people are polar opposites, others are too alike, and some just outright hate each other.

But whatever the reason may be for their differences, there are many characters on television who fall for the person that they would least expect. These relationships keep the audience on the edge of their seat and make for some of the most entertaining (and ironic) romances on television.

And let's be real, who doesn't love some good relationship development?

Below is a slideshow featuring 31 couples who accidentally fell in love with each other.

1. Lucifer and Chloe - Lucifer

Lucifer and chloe lucifer
It's safe to say that Lucifer and Chloe didn't fall in love on purpose. But after going through what these two have, it's insane that they didn't get together sooner.

2. Clarke and Lexa - The 100

Clarke and lexa the 100
Considering they started off as leaders on opposite sides of a war, it was definitely an accident that Clarke and Lexa fell for each other. But you can't help who you love. With much to learn from one another, their relationship ended up changing both Clarke and Lexa for the better.

3. April and Jackson - Grey's Anatomy

April and jackson greys anatomy
Jackson and April were friends for seasons before anything actually happened between them. Jackson was always protective of April but it wasn't until later in the show that they realized they were a lot more than friends.

4. Jackie and Steven - That '70s Show

Jackie and steven that 70s show
Jackie and Steven are a couple that deserved better. Their relationship was an unexpected surprise and despite their bickering, they were just right for each other.

5. Logan and Veronica - Veronica Mars

Logan and veronica veronica mars
Logan and Veronica are another example of a couple who went from hate to love. Although they didn't like each other at first, they ended up falling head over heels for one another.

6. Barney and Robin - How I Met Your Mother

Barney and robin how i met your mother
Robin was in love with Barney's best friend and Barney was the type of guy who hated relationships. In fact, he hated them so much he even made a video for his friends begging them to get him out of any future relationship he may be in. But for some reason when Barney and Robin fell for each other, it made perfect sense.

Modern Family Season 10 Episode 1 Review: I Love a Parade

$

On Modern Family Season 10 Episode 1, it's the 4th of July, which is a weird choice for a September premiere, but maybe it was a good way to gel the family's dynamics back together. Question mark?

It's weird to watch a show centered around the 4th when it's not anywhere near the 4th, and we're not watching a re-run. While this was a strange choice for the setting of the premiere, it did have the feel of a family that was missing on Modern Family Season 9.

Grand Marshal - Modern Family

Maybe that was the goal. It was a way to get the band back together. In any case, we'll go with it.

We're back with the couples on the couch which is where the characters pitch some of their funniest lines.

Also noticeable was the relationship between Jay and Gloria which was light and fun. Although Gloria was pretty dumb with shooting off the cannon at the parade, Jay was back to his confident self, and Gloria wasn't mean.

Hey. You there? We're having some trouble getting these bad boys down.

Phil

That means we're off to a good start.

The storyline included just about everybody, including the elusive Lily. Even though she was mean, it wasn't surprising. They've got to give her character something, so she's the sarcastic, mean girl using insults to motivate.

Joe Holds his Ears - Modern Family Season 10 Episode 1

Considering she used to threaten to kill any baby Mitch and Cam brought home and stayed up to bust the tooth fairy; it fits her.

Related: Enjoy UNLIMITED access to thousands of Movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video. WATCH ANYWHERE. CANCEL ANYTIME!

Speaking of a new baby, it looks like Cal is it. Why would they need to adopt another baby when they can raise Cam's sister's kid while she's in the slammer? The couple gets another child without the added pain and drama of trying to adopt.

A little one is good for Mitch and Cam, so Cal should bring more excitement to their household, and give them more exciting storylines. Nice move.

The biggest issue with last season was the whole family dynamic. Ever since the Dunphy kids, Lily, and Manny all grew up, the show had a hard time with its flow.

But if you're always telling yourself how lucky you are, it's probably because you're afraid to ask yourself how happy you are. Right?

Dylan

There was little consistency between characters; it seemed like the parents didn't know what to do with themselves, and the grown kids were all over the place. It was not a good thing.

Maybe that happens when the kids grow, and the adults get lost in "What the hell do we do now?" mode. That may have been what they were trying to convey on Modern Family Season 9. Maybe it happened organically.

Claire and Jay at the Parade - Modern Family Season 10 Episode 1

However it happened, it was not working, and Modern Family suffered.

It looks like they've recognized that, and so are focusing on the families again by bringing everyone back together.

Related: Modern Family Killing Off 'Significant Character'

Less drama, more funny stuff. This show is a comedy, people.

Can you scratch my nose? I feel like you're closer.

Claire

The funny stuff is off to a good start. There was more than one laugh-out-loud moment and some great one-liners that didn't feel forced.

Claire was more chill than usual, and Phil was Phil. He's been the one constant on the show. No matter what happens, Phil is Phil, and we love him for that.

He's all about his kids, full of solid dad advice, and a comedic breath of fresh air.

Jay and Gloria Prep for the Parade - Modern Family Season 10 Episode 1

I have to say that I don't know if I can handle any more of Haley's break-ups. She's not happy with Arvin, and if things go where I think they're going, she might end up back with Dylan.

Phil would be over the moon, and even though Claire hated the pairing in the past, she probably wouldn't mind this time.

Related: Get Great Selection of New & Classic Movies with the Lifetime Movie Club via Prime Video Channels!

Dylan's getting his life together. He's still a bit of a doofus, but they smartened him up a bit. He's making his way in his life just like Haley is making her way in hers. Maybe it is a good time for them to get together. It would be nice to see her happy again.

Amazing news. The Grand Marshall in today's parade just got #MeToo'd, and they need me to fill in.

Jay

Whatever threw off Modern Family in the past seems to have passed. It may be too soon to tell, but this episode shows the storylines may be back on track.

We are going to need a solid Modern Family base because the show already revealed they're going to be dealing with some serious issues this season. The families need to be strong to be able to weather the coming storms.

How they're going to address weightier issues while keeping the show light remains to be seen. Hopefully, they can pull it off.

Over to you, Modern Family fanatics. Did you think it was strange to open with a July 4th episode? Do you feel like the show is back on a family track? Did you notice Gloria and Claire were less mean? Hit the comments and let us know what you think.

Did Jay manage to pull off his new role as grand marshal?

That was addressed on Modern Family Season 10 Episode 1 when the Pritchett-Dunphy-Ticker family got together at the annual Fourth of July parade.

Meanwhile, Haley found herself questioning her future with Arvin after they failed to fix things before he left for Switzerland.

It didn't help matters that she was distracted by the return of an old flame.

Modern Family Season 10 Episode 2 Review: Kiss and Tell

$

On Modern Family Season 10 Episode 2, the subject matter is relationship secrets, and Haley's got a doozy.

Finding out that Haley kissed Dylan was a disappointment. When she decided to come clean and tell Arvin, I thought there was hope for her. Our little Haley was growing up.

Not.

A Made Up Girlfriend - Modern Family

A few choice lines from Dylan and she's back in his arms. While I appreciate that Haley's young and she got loads of time to settle down, the relationship road and Haley has been done too much on the show.

Although Andy and Haley were a much better match, I liked her and Dylan together too. They were high school sweethearts, and there was pureness about them that was nice.

It was so predictable that Dylan was bettering himself for Haley and she fell for it.

Haley, I fell in love with you that day and I never stopped. I'm going to keep making myself better until I deserve you.

Dylan

So, this is where Modern Family is taking a stand? That you can love two people at the same time?

Not funny. Not in a comedy show.

Give Alex some more airtime. She's dating a firefighter and having hot sex. There's gotta be something funny there.

Phil Mean Girl - Modern Family Season 10 Episode 2

What about Luke? Give him a girlfriend. I don't recall that storyline ever happening for Luke.

While we're on the subject of relationships, we've got Manny. He has a girlfriend in the beginning, and since no one can verify, they automatically think he's gay? That's a bit of a leap.

Related: Enjoy UNLIMITED access to thousands of Movies and TV shows with Amazon Prime Video. WATCH ANYWHERE. CANCEL ANYTIME!

When Claire and Phil thought Alex was making up her boyfriend, they didn't assume she was gay, but I'll let that slide.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Mitch and Cam brought up the possibility to Gloria, she was in denial and seemed genuinely upset.

Well, well, well, if it isn't John, Paul, and George. Anybody need a Ringo?

Phil

The writers may have been trying to convey that she was upset Manny wouldn't have opened up to her, but it came off that she was upset he could be gay.

Oh boy.

Gloria doesn't have a problem with gays, so I'm going to say for the sake of argument she was upset because Manny didn't confide in her. That fits with the rest of the storyline with Gloria making every effort to show her support of his chosen lifestyle.

I didn't like the storyline. It didn't make sense. Yes, Manny has some less than traditional masculine qualities, but no one questioned his sexuality before, and who cares? If he is gay, great; if not, great.

Haley Reveals a Secret - Modern Family Season 10 Episode 2

Mitch and Cam should be the first ones to say that pushing Manny to come out would have been wrong. The Prichett/Dunphy/Delgado household has always been openly supportive, so there's no reason for anyone in that family to remain in the closet.

It feels like the writers are reaching.

Related: Modern Family Season 10 Episode 1 Review: I Love a Parade

I get it. Pulling out story after story for season after season is tough, but you have to stay true to the characters and the relationships and their arcs. Once you start to deviate from that, fans notice and faith in the show begins to fade.

Phil thinks he can Mean Girls me? How lame is that? Let me tell you something, I might be a pretty face, but I fight to win. Just like Legally Blonde!

Jay

Another storyline that fit like a square peg in a round hole was from Jay and Phil.

I will admit the whole Mean Girls bit was funny. Seeing Phil torn up having to be mean to Jay was on point. It should have bothered Phil because he's always wanted Jay's approval from day one. That wasn't the problem with the storyline.

The problem was Jay at the end.

Gathering at Jay's - Modern Family Season 10 Episode 2

We all know Jay likes Phil. Modern Family has been good about peppering this truth through the whole series. But Gloria revealing that Jay looks up to Phil and secretly wants to be like him?

No. That's not Jay.

It came off like Jay revealed this to his wife in a private husband/wife conversation. I'm not buying that.

Related: Get Great Selection of New & Classic Movies with the Lifetime Movie Club via Prime Video Channels!

Jay's a salty dog. He has a hard shell with a bit of soft gooey center. He loves his family. But the Jay we all have come to know is confident in Jay Pritchett. He doesn't want to be like Phil.

Jay has cut loose more than once, so it's not like he can't be silly and have a good time.

Did you get a peck from a pickled Pepper?

Cam

Remember when the adults all got kicked out of the fancy restaurant and ended up at a taco stand?

Jay was the one to sing into his beer bottle, belting out "Midnight Train to Georgia."

Jay has always been okay being Jay. He's not secretly whispering to Gloria how he wants to be like Phil. Come on.

So, we have the families together, which was something Modern Family needed to bring back, but the show still feels disheveled. Bring back the easy breezy funny and keep the characters true.

What do you think Modern Family fanatics? Am I too critical? Were you annoyed at the Haley love life angle? Did you buy the whole Jay wants to be more like Phil storyline?
